〜てはならない (~te wa naranai) — must not (formal, written)

The written, stiff form of てはいけない — a big rule or principle: 決して忘れてはならない (must never forget).

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vて + はならない/はなりません

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Company rulebooks, contracts, speeches, newspapers — where a rule or principle is written: 「失敗を人のせいにしてはなりません」.
    • Not for telling a friend 'don't watch TV'.

    Meaning

    • 「〜てはならない」= must not — the same meaning as 「〜てはいけない」, only a stiffer and more serious tone.
    • It often pairs with 「決して」to state a big, moral prohibition: 「この失敗を決して忘れてはならない」.

    How to attach

    • Straight onto the て-form + はならない (忘れてはならない)
    • Polite form: 〜てはなりません (してはなりません)

    Versus what you know

    • N4You learned 「〜てはいけない」— for daily life it is all you need; 「てはならない」is its written form.
    • Keep it apart from 「てはいられない」: 「忘れてはならない」= must not forget (prohibition), 「待ってはいられない」= can't keep waiting (situation).

    Watch out

    • With friends keep saying 「忘れちゃだめ」— 「てはならない」sounds far too stiff in speech.
    • Its meaning is the opposite of 「〜なければならない」(must) — don't be fooled by the shared ならない.
