〜か〜ないかのうちに (~ka ~nai ka no uchi ni) — the moment ~ (almost the same instant)
One thing has barely happened and the next already has: 「横になるかならないかのうちに寝た」.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Back in your room after a night shift: 「ベッドに横になるかならないかのうちに、寝てしまった」(I had barely lain down on the bed when I fell asleep).
- At the shop: 「5時になるかならないかのうちに、彼は帰る準備を始めた」— it had barely turned five and he was already getting ready to leave (with a hint of 'what a hurry!').
Meaning
Before you can even tell whether the first thing has finished or not, the next thing has already happened.
How to attach
- You need the same verb twice: dictionary form or た-form + か + the same verb's ない-form + かのうちに
- For example: 開くか開かないか・終わったか終わらないか
Versus what you know
- N3「〜たとたん(に)」= 'as soon as'; 「〜か〜ないかのうちに」is a way to say something even faster.
- N3「〜かと思うと」also says 'right away', but this one is stronger — 'almost the very same instant'.
Watch out
- Only momentary verbs (着く・終わる・鳴る・開く) — not long actions like 勉強する.
- What follows must be a fact that already happened; never your own wish or a request, like 「〜ましょう」「〜てください」「〜たい」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
電車のドアが開くか開かないかのうちに、みんなが降りていった。
でんしゃのドアがあくかあかないかのうちに、みんながおりていった。
The train doors had barely opened when everyone got off.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 開く = to open (a momentary action) → 開くか+開かないか (the same verb twice) → we attached 「のうちに」 → then a fact that already happened: みんなが降りていった.
アラームが鳴ったか鳴らないかのうちに、弟は止めてまた寝てしまった。
アラームがなったかならないかのうちに、おとうとはとめてまたねてしまった。
The alarm had barely rung when my brother switched it off and went back to sleep.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 鳴る = to ring → 鳴った (Vた) か+鳴らない (Vない) か → 「のうちに」 → then the fact: 止めてまた寝てしまった (「〜てしまった」 adds an 'oh, honestly!' feeling).
店長が「休憩」と言うか言わないかのうちに、みんな外に出ていった。
てんちょうが「きゅうけい」というかいわないかのうちに、みんながいにでていった。
The manager had barely said "break" when everyone went outside.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 言う = to say (a one-moment action) → 言うか+言わないか → 「のうちに」 → then the fact of what happened: みんな外に出ていった — not a suggestion like 'let's go'.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「ベッドに横に__かのうちに、眠ってしまった。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: V-る + か + the same verb's V-ない.
Same verb: 横になるか + 横にならないか + のうちに. The order is always "plain → ない".
Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: Does a fact or a wish follow?
A wish or request like 「〜ましょう」「〜てください」cannot follow — only a fact that happened.
Which form gives the strongest "almost the same instant" feeling?
💡 Hint: Even faster than N3's かと思うと.
「〜か〜ないかのうちに」carries a stronger 'ほとんど同時に' (almost simultaneous) feeling than 「〜かと思うと」.
