〜つつある (~tsutsu aru) — is in the process of changing (formal)
A change is gradually moving forward (news language) — 「増えつつある」= is on the rise.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- On TV news: 「日本で働く外国人が増えつつある」(the number of foreigners working in Japan is growing).
- The 店長 in a meeting: 「売り上げは回復しつつあります」(sales are recovering).
- It is the word of the news, company reports and meetings — it sounds formal, like written language.
Meaning
- 「〜つつある」= 'a change is gradually moving forward'.
- Compared with 「増えている」, 「増えつつある」clearly shows the movement — 'still adding, not finished yet'.
How to attach
Drop ます from the ます-form and add つつある: 増え+つつある、変わり+つつある
Versus what you know
- N4「〜ている」(食べている、増えている) — for everyday talk that is all you need.
- N3「〜最中」= 'right in the middle of' (an action); 「つつある」= 'gradually changing' (a change).
Watch out
- Only with verbs of change (増える・減る・広がる・回復する・暖かくなる).
- Not with action verbs like 食べる・読む・話す — 「ご飯を食べつつある」is wrong; that is 「食べている」.
- Say 「暑くなりつつあるね」to a friend and you sound like a newsreader — there, say 「暑くなってきたね」.

💡 Hint: The change is still going on.
減りつつある = is decreasing (ongoing, formal). 減った = has decreased; 減るところだ = about to decrease; 最中 is for being mid-action.
