〜抜きで (~nuki de) — without / leaving ~ out
With that deliberately taken out — 「わさび抜きで」= without wasabi.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Ordering sushi: 「わさび抜きでお願いします」(without wasabi, please) — the most everyday use of 「抜き」.
- At the office party: 「今日は仕事の話は抜きにして、楽しく飲みましょう」(let us leave work talk out today and enjoy the drinks).
- To a friend: 「お世辞抜きに、君の日本語はうまいよ」(no flattery — your Japanese is good).
Meaning
- 「抜く」= to pull out, remove; 「N抜きで」= with that deliberately taken out, without it.
- 「冗談抜きで」= no joke, seriously.
How to attach
- N + 抜きで/抜きに
- N + は/を + 抜きにして
- Before a noun: N抜きのN (わさび抜きの寿司)
Versus what you know
- N4「〜なしで」: 「砂糖なしで」= there is no sugar (a state); 「砂糖抜きで」= sugar taken out (deliberately removed).
- So for orders and 'let us leave X out', 抜き is the one.
- 「〜を抜きにしては…ない」(impossible without it) is a different form — it has its own page.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
わさび抜きでお願いします。
わさびぬきでおねがいします。
Without wasabi, please.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) わさび = wasabi → 「抜きで」 directly = with that taken out → then the order: お願いします.
今日は仕事の話は抜きにして、楽しく飲みましょう。
きょうはしごとのはなしはぬきにして、たのしくのみましょう。
Let's leave work talk out of it today and enjoy our drinks.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 仕事の話 = work talk → 「は抜きにして」 = leaving that out → then what to do: 楽しく飲みましょう.
冗談抜きで、この店のラーメンは日本一だと思う。
じょうだんぬきで、このみせのラーメンはにっぽんいちだとおもう。
No joke, I think this shop's ramen is the best in Japan.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 冗談 = joking → 「抜きで」 = with the joking taken out, seriously → then what I truly think: 日本一だと思う.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「コーヒー、砂糖_でお願いします。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The form that attaches straight to a noun.
N + 抜きで: 砂糖抜きで = with the sugar left out.
「今日は仕事の話は_、楽しく飲もう。」— which says 'leaving work talk out'?
💡 Hint: An invitation (〜よう) follows, not 'impossible'.
N は抜きにして = leaving that out. 「抜きにしては」needs a negative 'not possible' after it, not an invitation.
What does 「お世辞抜きに、うまいね」mean?
💡 Hint: お世辞 = flattery; 抜き = taken out.
お世辞抜きに = with flattery removed → it is genuinely good.
