〜じゃなくて・ではなくて (~ja nakute / de wa nakute) — not A, but B
Correcting a mistake — "not that, this".
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
It is the pattern you use daily at work to correct a mistake, and the short, written 「〜ではなく」sounds neater still.
Meaning
「〜じゃなくて」removes the wrong item and puts the right one in: 「火曜日じゃなくて、水曜日です」= not Tuesday — Wednesday.
How to attach
- It works with nouns and な-adjectives; in writing or formal speech it becomes 「〜ではなくて」.
- い-adjectives take 「〜くなくて」and verbs 「〜ないで」: 「行かないで、うちにいた」.
