〜といっても (~to itte mo) — although I say
The word sounds big; the reality isn't — lowering expectations.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
- 「〜といっても」says that what you just called something sounds bigger than it really is: 「日本語ができるといっても、少しだけだ」= I say I speak Japanese, but only a little.
- It lowers the listener's expectations, which also makes it a polite, modest move.
How to attach
- Words like 少し, たった and ほんの usually follow.
- 「〜とはいっても」is the same, slightly stronger.
