〜ことにする・ことにしている (~koto ni suru / koto ni shite iru) — decide to / make a habit of

A decision you made yourself — once, or as a standing rule.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb V辞書形/Vない + ことにする
    Verb V辞書形/Vない + ことにしている

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    Meaning

    • 「〜ことにする」marks a decision you make yourself: 「来年、N2を受けることにした」= I've decided to take N2 next year.
    • The past 「〜ことにした」says the decision is made.
    • If that decision has become a standing habit, use 「〜ことにしている」: 「毎朝、走ることにしている」= I make it a rule to run every morning.

    How to attach

    The negative is 「〜ないことにする」: 「お酒を飲まないことにした」.

    Versus what you know

    • N4Don't confuse it with 「〜にする」(N にする = I'll choose this) — that picks an item, this decides on an action.
    • N3For a decision made by others, use 「〜ことになる」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    来年、N2を受けることにした。

    らいねん、N2をうけることにした。

I've decided to take N2 next year.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 受ける is the plain form → attach ことにする to it → past tense した → it means 'I have made the decision myself'.

    毎朝、30分走ることにしている。

    まいあさ、さんじゅっぷんはしることにしている。

I make it a rule to run for 30 minutes every morning.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 走る → ことにする → the している form → it means 'I've made this decision into a habit'.

    健康のために、お酒を飲まないことにした。

    けんこうのために、おさけをのまないことにした。

For my health, I've decided not to drink.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 飲む → ない-form 飲まない → ことにした → it became 'a decision not to do it'.
