〜って・んだって (~tte / ~n datte) — casual quote / I heard
Passing on what someone said, or bringing a word up — the little spoken particle that does both.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
- 「って」does three jobs and you hear all three every day.
- First, quoting someone directly, in place of 「と」: 「行くって言った」= he said "I'm going".
- Second, passing on something you heard, as 「〜んだって」: 「田中さん、国に帰るんだって」= I hear Tanaka is going home.
- Third, picking up a word to ask about it: 「シフトって何?」= what does "shift" mean?
Watch out
All three are casual; in writing or formal speech you need 「と」, 「〜そうです」or 「というのは」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
田中さん、来月国に帰るんだって。
たなかさん、らいげつくににかえるんだって。
I hear Tanaka is going back home next month.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 帰る stays in its plain form → add んだって → 帰るんだって = (Tanaka) is going back, I hear. It tells us the speaker heard it, not saw it.
店長が「早く来て」って言ってた。
てんちょうが「はやくきて」っていってた。
The manager was saying, "Come early."
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) The words that were said, 「早く来て」, are kept exactly as they were → then って instead of と → 「早く来て」って言ってた.
「シフト」って何?
「シフト」ってなに?
What does "shift" mean?
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) シフト is a noun → then って is added (= というのは) → シフトって何? = what is a "shift"?
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「明日、休み_。」— which one says "I hear tomorrow is a holiday"?
💡 Hint: A noun needs だ first.
休み + だって = I hear it's a holiday.
「行く」_言った。— which particle quotes it casually?
💡 Hint: Look for the casual version of 「と」.
In speech と becomes って: 「行く」って言った.
In 「時給って何?」, what is って doing?
💡 Hint: It picks up a word and asks what it means.
N + って = というのは — "what does that word mean?"
