    〜かけ・かける (~kake / ~kakeru) — half-done / about to

Started but not finished — the half-eaten meal, the book you're partway through.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vます [ます] + かけ(の/だ)
    Verb Vます [ます] + かける

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    Meaning

    • Adding 「〜かけ」to a verb's ます-stem means "started but not finished": 「食べかけのご飯」= a half-eaten meal, 「読みかけの本」= a book I'm partway through.
    • As a verb, 「〜かける」means "be about to": 「言いかけてやめた」= I started to say it and stopped.
    • There are uses like 「死にかける」= nearly die.

    How to attach

    • Before a noun it is 「〜かけの N」, at the end of a sentence 「〜かけだ」.
    • ます-stem + かけ — 食べます → 食べかけ.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    食べかけのご飯を置いて出た。

    たべかけのごはんをおいてでた。

I left my half-eaten meal and went out.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 食べます → drop ます: 食べ → attach かけ to it → の before the noun → 食べかけのご飯 = half-eaten meal.

    この本はまだ読みかけだ。

    このほんはまだよみかけだ。

I'm still partway through this book.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 読みます → drop ます: 読み → かけ → かけだ at the end of the sentence.

    何か言いかけて、やめた。

    なにかいいかけて、やめた。

I started to say something, then stopped.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 言います → 言い → かける → て-form 言いかけて → it means 'to be about to do'.
