〜というか (~to iu ka) — or rather
Talking while you hunt for the right word — "kind, or rather… soft".
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Rare in formal settings; common among friends.
Meaning
- 「〜というか」corrects yourself mid-sentence when the first word wasn't quite right: 「彼は優しいというか、甘い」= he's kind, or rather… soft.
- Standing alone at the head of a sentence, 「というか、〜」means "actually, come to think of it…" and revises what you just said.
Versus what you know
N3It resembles Lesson 13's 「〜というより」, but というか is more spoken and has a "thinking aloud" feel — often you try two or three words: 「AというかBというか」.
