こと と の (koto to no) — the two nominalisers

When you turn a verb into a noun, sometimes it is こと and sometimes の — this page sorts out which.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb V辞書形 + こと/の
    い-adj い-adj + こと/の
    な-adj な-adj [だ] + な + こと/の
    N N [だ] + な + こと/の

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    Meaning

    • Both こと and の turn a verb into a noun, but they are not always interchangeable.
    • Remember three groups.
    • First, こと only — inside set patterns like 〜ことができる, 〜ことがある, 〜ことにする.
    • Second, の only — before verbs of direct perception or helping, such as 見る, 聞く, 手伝う, 待つ: in 「弟が泣いているのを見た」you cannot use こと.
    • Third, either one — in a sentence like 「日本語を勉強すること/の は 楽しい」both are fine, though の is more common in speech.

    Watch out

The exam asks exactly this choice, so learn the second group well.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    弟が泣いているのを見た。

    おとうとがないているのをみた。

I saw my little brother crying.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 泣いている (crying) → it's a scene seen with your own eyes → so it needs の, not こと → 泣いているのを見た. You can't say 「泣いていることを見た」 here.

    私はピアノをひくことができます。

    わたしはピアノをひくことができます。

    I can play the piano.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ひく (to play an instrument) → 〜ことができる is a fixed pattern → so it must be こと → ひくことができます. の can't go here.

    毎日走るのは楽しいです。

    まいにちはしるのはたのしいです。

    Running every day is fun.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 走る (to run) → it's a sentence saying "is fun" → both こと and の work → の is heard more in speech, so it says 走るのは.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「子どもが遊んでいる_を見ました。」— what fills the blank?

💡 Hint: 見る is a verb of direct perception.
