〜というのは (~to iu no wa) — what X means is

Opening up a word or an idea — the "what this means is…" pattern.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb V普通形 + というのは
    N N + というのは

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

It is useful for teaching a new word, explaining a rule, or making your own point clear.

    Meaning

When you need to explain what a word or an idea means, 「〜というのは」raises the topic and 「〜ことだ」or 「〜という意味だ」delivers the meaning: 「『時給』というのは、1時間の給料のことだ」= "hourly wage" means the pay for one hour.

    How to attach

    • In speech it shortens to 「〜っていうのは」or just 「〜って」.
    • In writing you will also meet the shorter, more formal 「〜とは」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    「時給」というのは、1時間の給料のことだ。

    「じきゅう」というのは、いちじかんのきゅうりょうのことだ。

"Jikyuu" means the pay for one hour.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 時給 is a noun → add というのは to raise it as the topic → then 〜のことだ gives the meaning → the full sentence "jikyuu means …" is done.

    外国で働くというのは、簡単なことではない。

    がいこくではたらくというのは、かんたんなことではない。

Working abroad is not an easy thing.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 外国で働く is a full sentence → というのは makes it the topic → then comes the conclusion "it is not an easy thing".

    「ビザ」ってどういう意味ですか。

    「ビザ」ってどういういみですか。

    What does "visa" mean?

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) In speech, というのは is shortened to って → 「ビザって」 = "visa" means… → then どういう意味ですか asks for the meaning.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「『残業』_、時間の後で働くことです。」— which is right?

💡 Hint: The word's meaning is being opened up.
