V dictionary form / V ない-form + ない + ように、V2 (V-jisho / V-nai + you ni, V2) — So that ~ / so that ~ does not happen
The pattern for saying what you do so that some situation happens, or does not.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
「ように」takes the goal in front of it and the action you take behind it: 忘れないように メモします = "I take a note so that I do not forget." The key point is this — **the verb before ように is normally one you do not control yourself**. That is why you see potential forms (読める, 覚えられる), intransitive verbs (聞こえる, 入る) or ない-forms (忘れない, 遅れない) there. The two halves do not need the same subject — 子どもが 飲まないように、薬を 高い ところに 置きます. Do not mix it up with 「ために」(Lesson 17): ために takes a verb you do on purpose (日本へ 行くために お金を ためます), while ように takes a verb that is not in your hands. A small comma after ように makes the sentence easier to read.

Question: 1/3「 ように、メモします」— which fits the blank?
💡 Hint: The ます form never comes before ように.
忘れないように メモします = I take a note so I do not forget. Before ように you need the dictionary form or the ない-form.
Which one says "I study every day so that I can read kanji"?
💡 Hint: Before ように comes a form that is not in your hands — a potential form or a ない form.
読める is a potential form, so it takes ように — 漢字が 読めるように. For an action you do on purpose you need ために — 車を 買うために 働きます.
Which says "I walk every day so that I do not get sick"?
💡 Hint: You need the "does not happen" meaning.
The ない-form of なる is ならない. 病気に ならないように = so that I do not get sick.
