Meaning
「ように」takes the goal in front of it and the action you take behind it: 忘れないように メモします = "I take a note so that I do not forget."
How to attach
- The key point is this — the verb before ように is normally one you do not control yourself.
- That is why you see potential forms (読める, 覚えられる), intransitive verbs (聞こえる, 入る) or ない-forms (忘れない, 遅れない) there.
- The two halves do not need the same subject — 子どもが 飲まないように、薬を 高い ところに 置きます.
- A small comma after ように makes the sentence easier to read.
Versus what you know
Do not mix it up with 「ために」(Lesson 17): ために takes a verb you do on purpose (日本へ 行くために お金を ためます), while ように takes a verb that is not in your hands.
