Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- An email comes from the company IT department: 'The system could go down at some point, so back up your data.'
- It is mostly used for unwanted risks — the language of emails, notices and workplace warnings.
Meaning
- 「〜ないとも限らない」= 'you can't say it will never happen — so be careful'.
- 「ない」and 「とも限らない」, two negatives, combine to mean 'it could happen'.
- Preparation or caution usually follows: 〜ので、〜ておこう・気をつけてください.
How to attach
- Verb ない-form + 「とも限らない」: 止まらないとも限らない
- Also with 「誰が・いつ・どこで」: 「誰が見ていないとも限らない」= someone might be watching
Versus what you know
- N3Don't confuse it with 「〜とは限らない」(高い物がいいとは限らない = expensive things aren't necessarily good) — that one says 'not always so'.
- N2It is close to 「〜かねない」('might well, bad'), but 「ないとも限らない」speaks of something unlikely that still must not be ignored.
