〜ものとして (~mono to shite) — assuming ~ / on the assumption that ~
Treat ~ as true, even if it isn't certain, and act on it — common in notices and at work.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A letter comes from the city office or your company: 'If we receive no reply by the deadline, we will treat you as absent.'
- It is a slightly formal form — the language of rules, notices and the office.
Meaning
- Nobody knows the truth yet, but they act 'taking it as so' — that is 「〜ものとして」.
- What follows is always an action based on that assumption: 扱う・進める・始める・計画する.
How to attach
- Straight to the plain form of a verb or い-adj: 欠席するものとして・ないものとして
- な-adj takes 「な」or 「である」: 必要なものとして
- A noun takes 「である」: 本人であるものとして
Versus what you know
N3「〜としたら・とすれば」('supposing ~') imagines something and asks or wonders 'then what?'; 「ものとして」treats the thing as settled and does something real — makes a plan, starts, handles the matter accordingly.
Watch out
A question or a 'what would happen?' musing cannot follow.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
期限までに返事がない場合は、欠席するものとして扱います。
きげんまでにへんじがないばあいは、けっせきするものとしてあつかいます。
If there is no reply by the deadline, you will be treated as absent.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 欠席する = to be absent (plain form) → 「ものとして」 directly = taking it that you're absent → then the action that follows: 扱います = you will be treated that way.
雨が降るものとして、イベントは室内で準備を進めます。
あめがふるものとして、イベントはしつないでじゅんびをすすめます。
Assuming it will rain, we are preparing the event indoors.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 雨が降る = it will rain (not certain yet) → 「ものとして」 = assuming it will → then the actual action: 準備を進めます.
読む人は専門知識がないものとして、説明はやさしく書いてください。
よむひとはせんもんちしきがないものとして、せつめいはやさしくかいてください。
Assume the reader has no specialist knowledge, and write the explanation simply.

Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「書類を出した人は本人___ものとして、手続きを進めます。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: What does a noun need before ものとして?
N + である + ものとして. 本人であるものとして = assuming it is the person themself. 「だ」does not work.
In which sentence is 「ものとして」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Does a real action follow, or a question?
ものとして is followed by an action based on the assumption. For 'what would happen?', say 「明日雨が降るとしたら」.
「もし宝くじが当たった__、何を買いますか。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: It imagines something and asks a question.
としたら = supposing ~ (imagining + a question). ものとして treats it as given and does something real; it doesn't ask.
