〜ば〜で (~ba ~de) — if ~, then that brings its own trouble
The same word twice — 'even when it turns out that way, it's not as easy (or as bad) as you'd think'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- In a slow month at work you think: 'A bit of free time would be nice.' Then the free time comes and you find your hours cut and your pay cut too.
- In Japanese: 「暇なら暇で、給料が減って困る」.
Meaning
- 「〜ば〜で」= 'even if the situation you wanted (or feared) comes, it brings its own trouble — or its own way out'.
- After it usually comes a new problem: 〜が大変だ・困る・〜もかかる
- Sometimes the opposite, 'even without it there's a way': 〜ばいい・何とかなる
How to attach
- The same word twice: first a conditional form (ば・なら), then the same word + 「で」
- Verbs: 〜ば + た-form + で (上がれば上がったで)
- い-adj: 〜ければ + 〜い + で (多ければ多いで)
- な-adj and nouns: 〜なら + the same word + で (暇なら暇で)
- 「〜たら〜たで」is used with the same meaning.
Versus what you know
N3Don't confuse it with 「〜ば〜ほど」— that is 'the more ~, the more ~' (練習すればするほど上手になる); 「ば〜で」says 'so be it, but…'.
Watch out
You can't put two different words in the slots (高ければ安いで ✗) — the same word always repeats.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
給料が上がれば上がったで、税金も高くなる。
きゅうりょうがあがればあがったで、ぜいきんもたかくなる。
If your salary goes up, that brings its own problem: your taxes go up too.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 上がる = to go up → ば-form: 上がれば → the same verb in the た-form: 上がった + 「で」 → then a new hassle: 税金も高くなる.
仕事が暇なら暇で、時給が減って生活が苦しくなる。
しごとがひまならひまで、じきゅうがへってせいかつがくるしくなる。
If work is slow, that brings its own trouble: hourly pay drops and life gets hard.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 暇 = free, not busy (な-adj) → 「なら」: 暇なら → the same word + 「で」: 暇で → then its own problem: 生活が苦しくなる.
傘がなければないで、コンビニで買えばいい。
かさがなければないで、コンビニでかえばいい。
If you don't have an umbrella, so be it — just buy one at a convenience store.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ない = not have (works like an い-adj) → 「ければ」: なければ → the same word + 「で」: ないで → then not a problem but a solution: 買えばいい.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「部屋が狭ければ___、家賃が安くて助かる。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The same い-adj in its plain form + で.
い-adj: 〜ければ + 〜い + で. 狭ければ狭いで = if it's small, so be it (but the rent is cheap).
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is it the same word in both slots?
「ば〜で」must repeat the same word. あれば and 忙しい are different words, so it fails.
「日本語は練習すれば___上手になる。」— which gives 'the more ~, the more ~'?
💡 Hint: The N3 'the more…the more'.
「〜ば〜ほど」= the more ~, the more ~. 「〜ば〜で」says 'so be it, but it has its own trouble' — not this meaning.
