〜としたところで (~to shita tokoro de) — even supposing ~ (it makes no difference)
'Suppose that did happen — it still wouldn't be enough' — としても with a sigh added.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- The workload has piled up. A colleague says: 'If we add one more person, we'll probably finish.'
- You reply: 「一人増やしたとしたところで、今月中には終わらない」— even supposing we add one person, it won't be done this month.
Meaning
- 「〜としたところで」= 'let's suppose so — the result is still the same, or still not enough'.
- After it comes a negative or 'not enough' judgement: 〜ない・無理だ・〜だろう.
How to attach
- Plain form + 「としたところで」: 増やしたとしたところで・安いとしたところで
- な-adj and nouns take 「だ」: 本当だとしたところで
- 「仮に・たとえ」often comes in front
- In speech you also hear 「〜としたって」.
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「としたら」(supposing ~ → then what?) and 「としても」(even supposing ~); 「としたところで」= 「としても」+ the deflated 'it's no use' of point 4.
- Point 4's 「たところで」followed an action you could really do (Vた); 「としたところで」follows a 'suppose' idea, and attaches to verbs, い-adj, な-adj and nouns alike.
Watch out
A good result, a wish or a request does not follow.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
人を一人増やしたとしたところで、この仕事量では今月中に終わらない。
ひとをひとりふやしたとしたところで、このしごとりょうではこんげつちゅうにおわらない。
Even supposing we add one person, with this workload it won't be finished this month.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 増やす = to add → plain form: 増やした → 「としたところで」 = even supposing that happened → then 'still not enough': 終わらない.
仮に彼の話が本当だとしたところで、今さら契約は変えられない。
かりにかれのはなしがほんとうだとしたところで、いまさらけいやくはかえられない。
Even supposing what he says is true, the contract can't be changed now.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 本当 = true (N) → put 「だ」: 本当だ → 「仮に」 gives 'supposing' → 「としたところで」 → then a negative: 変えられない.
家賃が安いとしたところで、駅から四十分では通勤が大変だ。
やちんがやすいとしたところで、えきからよんじゅっぷんではつうきんがたいへんだ。
Even supposing the rent is cheap, forty minutes from the station makes commuting hard.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 安い = cheap (い-adj) → 「としたところで」 directly → even supposing it really is cheap → then 'still hard': 通勤が大変だ.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「その話が本当___、もう手遅れだ。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: What makes a noun into a plain-form sentence?
N/な-adj + だ + としたところで. 本当だとしたところで = even supposing it's true.
In which sentence is 「としたところで」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is the second half 'still no good', or an invitation?
としたところで needs a negative judgement; an invitation (〜ましょう) can't follow. Say 「晴れたら、行きましょう」.
「宝くじが当たった___、何に使いたい?」— which gives 'supposing ~, then'?
💡 Hint: An open question follows — 'then what would you do?'
「としたら」= supposing ~ (then?). 「としたところで」and 「としても」= even supposing — they don't fit a 'what would you do' question.
