〜こととて (~koto tote) — since ~ (as an excuse, with an apology)
'Being new, I may have fallen short — please forgive me' — an old-style, polite excuse.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Picture a greeting on your first day at a new company, or a letter of apology after a mistake: 'As this is my first time, there will be many shortcomings — please forgive me.'
- Old and written — letters, formal greetings and notices from shops or offices only.
Meaning
- 「〜こととて」= the excuse 'this was my situation, so… please understand'.
- What follows is usually an apology or a request for understanding — お許しください・ご了承ください・失礼いたしました — or a notice that something cannot be done.
How to attach
- Plain form + 「こととて」
- After nouns and な-adjectives use 「の」/「な」instead of 「だ」: 初めてのこととて・不慣れなこととて
- Because of its old flavour, 「ない」often becomes 「ぬ」: 慣れぬこととて・知らぬこととて
Versus what you know
N2「〜ものですから」(「電車が止まったものですから」) is also a polite excuse, but spoken; 「こととて」is older and written.
Watch out
It is not used in chats with friends, nor for invitations or orders.
