〜(ら)れる (~(ra)reru) — (it) comes to mind / is felt naturally
Looks just like the passive, but nobody does anything to you — a memory or feeling simply rises in your mind.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Late at night in a small room in Tokyo, an old Nepali song plays on YouTube, and the thought comes: 「この歌を聞くと、ふるさとのことが思い出される」— 'when I hear this song, memories of home come back on their own.'
Meaning
- In form it is just like the passive (叱られる・呼ばれる), but here nobody is doing anything to me — a memory, a worry or a thought rises without my wanting it.
- 「思い出す」= I deliberately recall; 「思い出される」= the memory comes by itself.
- This use only happens with verbs of the mind: 思われる・感じられる・思い出される・案じられる (can't stop worrying)・悔やまれる (regret wells up)・待たれる (everyone is waiting for it).
- The 「〜と考えられる」「〜が予想される」of the news is the same thing — it softens the writer's view into 'this is what one naturally comes to think'.
How to attach
- Attach it like the passive: drop the 「ない」of the ない-form and add 「れる」(思い出さ+れる) or 「られる」(案じ+られる); 「する」→ 「される」.
- That is why the thing that comes to mind takes 「が」: 「ふるさとのことが思い出される」.
Versus what you know
N2「〜てならない」(気がしてならない) is also a feeling that rises by itself, but it is strong and emotional; 「(ら)れる」sounds calm and written.
Watch out
The key rule: verbs that have nothing to do with the mind, like 食べる・歩く・疲れる, never take this meaning.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
この歌を聞くと、ネパールで過ごした子どもの頃が思い出される。
このうたをきくと、ネパールですごしたこどものころがおもいだされる。
Whenever I hear this song, my childhood in Nepal comes back to me.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) この歌を聞くと = when I hear this song (the trigger) → 子どもの頃が = my childhood (what comes to mind, with 「が」) → 思い出す → 思い出さない → 思い出さ → attach 「れる」 = the memory comes back by itself.
一人で留学している息子の体調が案じられる。
ひとりでりゅうがくしているむすこのたいちょうがあんじられる。
I can't help worrying about the health of my son, who is studying abroad on his own.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 息子の体調が = my son's health (what I worry about, with 「が」) → 案じる = to worry (る-verb) → 案じ → 「られる」 = the worry comes on its own and stays.
大雪のため、明日も電車の遅れが予想される。
おおゆきのため、あしたもでんしゃのおくれがよそうされる。
Because of the heavy snow, train delays are expected tomorrow as well.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 大雪のため = because of the heavy snow → 電車の遅れが = train delays (what's being predicted) → 予想する → 予想さ → 「れる」 = it's naturally expected → news language.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「年を取った両親の健康が__。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: After 「が」, the form meaning the worry 'comes by itself'.
案じる → 案じられる = the worry keeps coming. With 「健康が」plain 「案じる」doesn't fit; 「案じさせる」is the causing form, and 「案じて」can't end the sentence.
In which sentence is the 'comes by itself' 「(ら)れる」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Something of the mind, or of the body?
疲れる is a state of the body, not a verb of the mind — just say 「足が疲れる」. 思い出す・悔やむ・待つ are tied to the mind, so they work.
In which sentence does 「(ら)れる」mean 'comes to mind by itself'?
💡 Hint: Did someone do something, or did it come by itself?
故郷の山が思い出される = the hills of home come to mind by themselves (a verb of the mind). The other three are passives — someone called, stepped on, stole.
