〜させられる (~saserareru) — can't help feeling ~ (something makes you)
Someone's work, a film or an event stirs a feeling or thought in you — 'it made me feel ~'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Your Japanese senior at the factory has worked there 20 years and still checks every item with care. You think to yourself: 「先輩の仕事ぶりには感心させられる」— 'I can't help admiring the way my senior works.'
Meaning
- But here nobody is forcing anything: something outside — a person's attitude, a film, the news — pulls a feeling or thought out of you.
- This meaning only comes with a few verbs of the mind: 感心する・考える・反省する・驚く・気づく.
How to attach
- To attach it, first make the causing form (考えさせる), then add 「られる」: 考えさせられる; 「する」→ 「させられる」.
- With う-verbs you usually hear the short form: 驚かされる・気づかされる.
Versus what you know
- N4This is the causative-passive you learned — 「先輩に酒を飲まされた」(I was made to drink).
- How it differs from 「(ら)れる」in the previous point: there a memory rises from inside by itself; here the cause is clearly outside and is marked with 「に/には」(彼の努力には驚かされる).
- Link it with 「ずにはおかない」too — one scene, two angles: 「この映画は人を考えさせずにはおかない」(from the film's side) and 「この映画には考えさせられた」(from my side).
Watch out
The key rule: action verbs like 飲む・残業する don't take this meaning — with them it goes back to 'I was forced to'.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
彼の丁寧な仕事ぶりには、いつも感心させられる。
かれのていねいなしごとぶりには、いつもかんしんさせられる。
I'm always impressed by how carefully he works.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 丁寧な仕事ぶりには = by his careful way of working (an outside cause, with 「には」) → 感心する = to be impressed → 「する」 → 「させられる」 = I can't help being impressed.
被災地のボランティアの話を聞いて、いろいろと考えさせられた。
ひさいちのボランティアのはなしをきいて、いろいろとかんがえさせられた。
Hearing the stories of volunteers in the disaster area gave me a lot to think about.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ボランティアの話を聞いて = hearing the volunteers' stories (the cause) → 考える = to think → 考え → 「させられた」 = what I heard made me think.
日本で働いてみて、時間を守る大切さに気づかされた。
にほんではたらいてみて、じかんをまもるたいせつさにきづかされた。
Working in Japan made me realize how important it is to be on time.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 日本で働いてみて = having actually worked in Japan (the cause) → 気づく = to realize → short form of 気づかせられる: 気づか + 「された」 = the experience made me realize.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「若い選手たちのまじめな練習ぶりには、感心__。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: First the causing form, then 「られる」.
感心する → 感心させる → 感心させられる = I can't help admiring it. 「させる」alone would mean 'makes others admire'; 「しられる」and 「されさせる」aren't real forms.
In which sentence does 「させられる」mean 'a feeling was stirred', not 'was forced'?
💡 Hint: A verb of the mind, or an action verb?
考えさせられた = his seriousness made me think. 飲む・練習する・残業する are action verbs, so those mean 'I was forced to'.
「この本を読んで、命の大切さについて深く__。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The book (an outside cause) made me think — from my side.
考えさせられた = the book made me think deeply. 思い出された = a memory came by itself (doesn't fit 「について」), 考えさせた = I made someone else think, and 考えずにはおかなかった only speaks from the cause's side, not with 'I' as subject.
