〜ずにはおかない (~zu ni wa okanai) — will surely ~ / cannot fail to ~
Something is so powerful it is sure to affect people — or a firm vow: 'I won't let it rest until ~'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A newspaper reviews a new film: 「この映画は、見る人を泣かせずにはおかない」— 'this film will make anyone who watches it cry.'
- It is stiff language from reviews, news and speeches.
Meaning
- 「おく」means 'to leave something as it is', so 「〜ずにはおかない」= it won't leave things without ~; ~ will surely happen.
- The first (and most common): the power of a film, news, a decision or an event is sure to affect people — the subject is a thing or another person, and the verb is usually in the causing form: 泣かせる・感動させる・考えさせる.
- The second: a strong vow by 'I' — 「必ず謝らせずにはおかない」(I will make them apologise, no matter what).
How to attach
- Attach it the same way: drop the 「ない」of the ない-form and add 「ずにはおかない」; 「する」→ 「せず」.
- 「〜ないではおかない」is also used.
Versus what you know
- N2Compare it with the 「〜ずにはいられない」: in 「泣かずにはいられない」I can't stop myself crying; in 「泣かせずにはおかない」the film makes me cry — we look from the side of the cause.
- In the previous point, 「ずにはすまない」, society binds me: 'you must'; in 「ずにはおかない」the power of the cause, or my own resolve, makes it happen for sure.
Watch out
The key rule: it isn't used for your own body's or heart's natural reaction — you can't say 「お腹がすいて食べずにはおかない」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
この映画は、見る人の心を動かさずにはおかない。
このえいがは、みるひとのこころをうごかさずにはおかない。
This film cannot fail to move the hearts of those who see it.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) この映画 = this film (the cause, the subject) → 心を動かす = to move the heart → 動かさない → drop 「ない」: 動かさ → 「ずにはおかない」 = it will move your heart for sure.
今回の値上げは、市民の生活に影響を与えずにはおかないだろう。
こんかいのねあげは、しみんのせいかつにえいきょうをあたえずにはおかないだろう。
This price rise is bound to affect people's daily lives.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 値上げ = price rise (the cause) → 影響を与える = to have an effect → 与えない → 与え → 「ずにはおかない」 = will certainly have an effect → 「だろう」 makes it a news-style forecast.
うちの子をいじめた相手には、必ず謝らせずにはおかない。
うちのこをいじめたあいてには、かならずあやまらせずにはおかない。
I will make whoever bullied my child apologize — no matter what.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) いじめた相手 = the one who bullied → 謝る = to apologize → causative: 謝らせる → 謝らせない → 謝らせ → 「ずにはおかない」 = I'll make them apologize, no matter what → the subject is 'I'; a strong resolve.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「彼女の歌は、聞く人を感動__にはおかない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The song 'makes' listeners moved — the 「ず」of the causing form.
感動させる → 感動させず + にはおかない = it will surely move people. 「されず」is passive and turns the meaning around; 「しず」and 「させないず」aren't real forms.
In which sentence is 「ずにはおかない」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A cause affecting others, or your own body's craving?
Eating because you're hungry is your own body's natural reaction — that's 「食べずにはいられない」. ずにはおかない is only for a cause surely affecting others, or for a firm vow.
「この発表は、世界中の人々を__。」— which means 'is sure to astonish'?
💡 Hint: The subject is 'the announcement' — the power of a cause.
驚かせずにはおかない = it will surely astonish. ずにはすまない is a duty society puts on you, 驚かずにはいられない is a person who can't help being surprised (it can't take 「を」), and 驚かせずにすむ = got by without surprising anyone.
