〜とみられる (~to mirareru) — is expected / believed to ~
The news form for 'police or experts estimate that ~'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
On the morning TV news you hear: 「火事の原因は、たばこの火とみられています」.
Meaning
- The newsreader is not stating for certain that a cigarette caused it; the police or experts looked at the evidence and judged 'it's probably this' — and that estimate is what 「〜とみられる」carries.
- 「みる」here means 'to judge by looking', and 「られる」turns it into 'it is judged so', which is why the sentence never says who made the judgement.
How to attach
- Attach it straight to the plain form: 増えるとみられる・難しいとみられる; after a noun 「だ」is usually dropped: 原因は故障とみられる.
- When people have held the view for a while it becomes 「〜とみられている」.
Versus what you know
- N2「〜とみえて」(忙しいとみえて = seems busy) is also a guess from what you see, but it is the speaker's own guess from watching someone's behaviour
- 「とみられる」is the estimate of officials or experts in news and reports — usually a damage figure (被害は50億円を超えるとみられる), the cause of an incident, or something about to happen (来週にも発表されるとみられる).
Watch out
- The key rule: this is written, news language — say 「明日は雨とみられる」to a friend about tomorrow's weather and you sound like a newsreader; there, 「降りそう」or「降るかも」is right.
- It is not used for your own feelings or plans either.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
事故の原因は、ブレーキの故障とみられる。
じこのげんいんは、ブレーキのこしょうとみられる。
The cause of the accident is believed to be a brake failure.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 事故の原因 = the cause of the accident → ブレーキの故障 = brake failure (a noun; 「だ」 dropped) → attach 「とみられる」 = police / experts believe this is it.
新しい駅ビルは、来年の春にも完成するとみられています。
あたらしいえきビルは、らいねんのはるにもかんせいするとみられています。
The new station building is expected to be finished as early as next spring.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 来年の春にも = as early as next spring → 完成する = to be completed (plain form) → 「とみられています」 = this is what is expected (polite; the current view).
今回の台風による被害は、50億円を超えるとみられる。
こんかいのたいふうによるひがいは、50おくえんをこえるとみられる。
Damage from this typhoon is estimated to exceed 5 billion yen.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 台風による被害 = typhoon damage → 50億円を超える = to exceed 5 billion yen (plain form) → 「とみられる」 = experts estimate it will be this much.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「けが人の数は、今後さらに__とみられる。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which verb form comes before 「とみられる」?
Plain form + とみられる. 増えるとみられる = expected to rise further. The て-form, the bare stem and the ば-form don't attach here.
In which sentence is 「とみられる」unnatural?
💡 Hint: News language, or a chat with a friend?
とみられる is a written form for reporting others' estimates in news. It doesn't fit chatting with a friend about your own test — say 「合格すると思うよ」.
A guess from what you saw: 「田中さんは疲れている__、会議中ずっとあくびをしていた。」
💡 Hint: The speaker's own guess from watching someone.
とみえて = seems ~ (from what you see), and so… — the speaker's own guess. とみられる is an official or expert estimate in the news, and 「とみられて」「とされて」「ものと思われて」can't link the clauses as 'and so' here.
