〜とされる (~to sareru) — is considered / said to be ~
Not one person's guess — 'it is held to be ~' by society, tradition or the rules.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
At an old temple in Nara you read the guide board: 「この寺は、約1300年前に建てられたとされる」. Who says so? No name — historians, tradition, everyone has long accepted it.
Meaning
「〜とされる」= 'it is considered / said to be' — a widely accepted view, or a status the rules assign.
How to attach
- Attach it straight to the plain form: 体にいいとされる; after a noun or な-adjective 「だ」can drop: 大人とされる・有効とされる.
- You often hear 「〜とされている」(is still held to be), and before a noun 「〜とされる N」(幸運を呼ぶとされる猫).
Versus what you know
- The previous 「〜とみられる」also hides the speaker, but it is a fresh estimate about a new event (原因は故障とみられる)
- 「とされる」is something long accepted or officially set — tradition, a scientific view, the law (日本では18歳から大人とされる).
Watch out
The key rule: this is not for your own opinion — to say 'I think this ramen is the best' you don't use 「おいしいとされる」; 「おいしいと思う」is right there.
Also
For a named source — 'the weather agency says…' — there is a different form, which comes later.

Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「この薬は、頭痛によく__とされている。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The plain form goes before 「とされる」.
Plain form + とされる. 効くとされている = is said to work well. The て-form, volitional and command forms don't attach.
In which sentence is 「とされる」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Your own opinion, or a view many people hold?
とされる is for what society, tradition or the rules hold. For your own taste, starting with 「私は」, you need 「おいしいと思う」.
「日本では昔から、北に枕を向けて寝るのは縁起が悪い__。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 「昔から」— a new estimate, or an old belief?
An old tradition or belief = とされている. とみられる is an estimate about a new event, 「とみえて」can't end the sentence, and 「悪いないものでもない」isn't a possible form.
