〜ものと思われる (~mono to omowareru) — it is thought that ~ / I believe ~
How reports and announcements state the writer's own judgement in a modest, objective way.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Before Golden Week the station announces: 「連休中は、各線とも大変な混雑になるものと思われます」. The speaker is the rail company itself — 'by our estimate it will be very crowded'.
Meaning
But 「混雑すると思います」would sound personal, like 'I feel'; 「ものと思われる」dresses the same estimate in objective, modest clothes: 'looking at the facts, this is naturally what one concludes'.
How to attach
- Attach it straight to the plain form of verbs and い-adjectives (遅れるものと思われる・高いものと思われる); after a な-adjective use 「な」or「である」, after a noun 「である」(故障であるものと思われる).
- You will also hear 「〜ものと思っていた」, 'I had simply assumed so'.
Versus what you know
- N4Think of the 「と思う」with 「もの」(naturally so) and 「思われる」(it comes to seem so) added.
- The difference from the previous 「〜とみられる」: that one is the news word for reporting someone else's estimate, police or experts; 「ものと思われる」is the judgement of the person writing the report or making the announcement.
Watch out
The key rule: this is a stiff, formal form — it doesn't appear in chat with friends, and not for your own wishes or plans either: 「私は来月帰国するものと思われる」sounds strange.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
連休中は、高速道路がかなり混雑するものと思われます。
れんきゅうちゅうは、こうそくどうろがかなりこんざつするものとおもわれます。
During the holidays, the expressways are expected to be quite congested.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 連休中 = throughout the long holiday → 混雑する = to be congested (plain form) → 「ものと思われます」 = the announcer's estimate, put politely and objectively.
犯人は、店の事情に詳しい人物であるものと思われる。
はんにんは、みせのじじょうにくわしいじんぶつであるものとおもわれる。
The culprit is thought to be someone who knows the shop well.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 店の事情に詳しい人物 = someone who knows the inner workings of the shop (a noun) → 「である」 after the noun → 「ものと思われる」 = the report writer's formal guess.
ご注文の商品は、明日の午前中には届くものと思われます。
ごちゅうもんのしょうひんは、あしたのごぜんちゅうにはとどくものとおもわれます。
Your order should arrive by tomorrow morning.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ご注文の商品 = the item you ordered → 届く = to arrive (plain form) → 「ものと思われます」 = the shop's polite estimate in an email to the customer.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「事故の原因は、ブレーキの故障__ものと思われる。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: What does a noun need before 「ものと思われる」?
N + である + ものと思われる. 故障であるものと思われる = is thought to be a malfunction. 「だもの」「のもの」「なもの」don't fit here (故障 is a noun).
In which sentence is 「ものと思われる」unnatural?
💡 Hint: An estimate about a situation, or your own plan?
ものと思われる is a formal estimate about a situation. You know your own wedding plans — say 「結婚するつもりだ」or「結婚する予定だ」.
A company notice to customers: 「大雪のため、配達が__。」— which fits best?
💡 Hint: The language of an official notice.
In a formal notice, your own estimate = ものと思われます. 「と思うよ」「っぽい」「かもね」are casual speech and don't belong in a notice.
