When to use it
- In a notice from the city office or on the news you meet a sentence like 「地域の実情に即した支援を行います」— 'we will give support in line with the real situation of this area.'
- This is stiff language for writing and speeches; with a friend 「現実に合わせて」is enough.
Meaning
The feeling of 「即す」is 'to sit tight against, to fit exactly'. So 「〜に即して」says: not following theory on paper or an old plan, but doing things so they fit the present reality, the facts or the rules exactly.
How to attach
Attach 「に即して」after a noun, and when a noun follows, use 「に即した N」(現状に即した計画).
Versus what you know
- N2「〜に沿って」(方針に沿って) also means 'in line with', but it is about following a line already drawn or someone's wishes (ご希望に沿って).
- 「即して」stresses 'not drifting away from reality' — which is why it most often comes with words like 現状・実態・事実・現実・時代.
Watch out
The key rule: the N in front must be something objective like facts, a situation or rules — you can't put a person there, as in 「先輩に即して」.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 外国人住民が増えている現状 = the current situation of a growing number of foreign residents → a noun (支援) follows, so 「に即した」 → 現状に即した支援 = support that fits the situation → 始めた = started.
