〜を限りに (~o kagiri ni) — as of ~ (and never again)
'Today is the last time — from tomorrow, never again!'
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- On New Year's morning your friend slaps the table: 「今日を限りにタバコをやめる!」— 'today is the last day; from tomorrow, never again!'.
- It works for your own vow and for a notice that a service is ending.
Meaning
- 「〜を限りに」= a firm declaration: 'up to this point only — after that, it ends for good'.
- What follows is always something ending: やめる・引退する・終了する・〜ない.
How to attach
- Usually a time noun: 今日・今回・今月・本年度・今シーズン + を限りに
- Set phrase: 「声を限りに」= at the top of one's voice (to the limit of the voice).
Versus what you know
- N2You met 「限り」(力の限り・知っている限り), and may have heard 「今年限りで辞めます」(only until the end of this year) — 「限りで」just gives the cut-off; 「を限りに」carries the force of a decision: 'that's it!'.
- The next point, 「をもって」, also marks an end, but only as an official announcement from an office or at a ceremony; 「を限りに」works just as well for a personal vow.
Watch out
Starting something (× 今日を限りにジョギングを始める) does not fit — nothing begins after 'the last day'.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
今日を限りに、夜中のラーメンはやめることにした。
きょうをかぎりに、よなかのラーメンはやめることにした。
As of today, I've decided to give up late-night ramen for good.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 今日 = today (a time noun) → 「を限りに」 = making today the last → then the thing that ends: やめることにした (decided to quit).
あの選手は今シーズンを限りに現役を引退すると発表した。
あのせんしゅはこんシーズンをかぎりにげんえきをいんたいするとはっぴょうした。
That player announced they will retire at the end of this season.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 今シーズン = this season → 「を限りに」 = making this season the last → then 現役を引退する (retire from playing) — announcing an end.
子どもたちは声を限りに応援歌を歌った。
こどもたちはこえをかぎりにおうえんかをうたった。
The children sang the cheering song at the top of their voices.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 声 = voice → 「を限りに」 = to the limit of one's voice (a fixed phrase) → as loudly as possible → 応援歌を歌った.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「今回_限りに、この大会への出場はやめます。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which particle comes before 「限りに」?
N + を限りに. 今回を限りに = this time being the last.
In which sentence is 「を限りに」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Does something end, or begin?
を限りに is followed by an ending (やめる・終了する・〜ない); 'start jogging' is a beginning, so it does not fit.
(to a friend) 「今日___、ゲームは一切やめる!」— which fits a personal vow?
💡 Hint: Talking to a friend — not an office announcement.
A personal vow → 今日を限りに. をもちまして is only for official announcements by organisations or at ceremonies; to a friend it sounds odd.
