〜をもって (~o motte) — as of / with (this) — official
'As of this date, it ends' — the stiff language of notices and ceremonies.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- On the door of a shop that has run for years, a sheet of paper: 「当店は本日をもって閉店いたします」.
- At the end of a graduation ceremony, over the microphone: 「これをもって卒業式を終わります」.
- It is only an official announcement by an organisation, an office or at a ceremony.
Meaning
- 「〜をもって」= 'on reaching this day or this point, it ends' — English 'as of'.
- An ending usually follows: 終了する・締め切る・閉店する・終わります.
How to attach
- Date or time noun + をもって: 本日・3月31日・以上・これ
- In notices and speeches you often hear the even more polite 「をもちまして」.
Versus what you know
Like 「を限りに」before it, it marks an end, but 「を限りに」carries a 'never again' decision and can be said to a friend.
Watch out
It is not used for your own small everyday matters (× 今日をもってダイエットを始めるよ).
Also
The other meaning of 「をもって」, 'by means of', comes in a later lesson.
