〜を境に (~o sakai ni) — from ~ on (a dividing point)
One day or event as a dividing line — 'before it, like this; after it, quite different'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A friend says: 「あの事故の日を境に、彼は車に乗らなくなった」— with that day as the line, his life before and after was different.
- It also appears in date cut-offs in rules and notices (4月1日を境にルールが変わる).
Meaning
- 境 means a border, like the river between two villages.
- 「〜を境に」makes a day, an event or an age into the line in the middle: 'before it, like this; after it, completely different'.
- It works for good and bad changes alike.
- What follows is a change of state: 〜ようになった・〜なくなった・急に〜・変わった.
How to attach
- N + を境に
- 「を境にして」is also said with the same meaning.
Versus what you know
N2「〜をきっかけに」is 'the trigger or chance that started some action' (映画をきっかけに日本語を始めた); 「を境に」stresses the before/after difference rather than the cause.
Watch out
An invitation or a plan of your own (× 卒業を境に旅行に行こう) does not fit — for that, use the next point, 「を機に」.
