〜を受けて (~o ukete) — in response to / following ~
Something happened or was announced — and in response someone took action. The form of news and notices.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- When a typhoon is coming, your phone gets an alert from the city, and the TV says: 「台風の接近を受けて、市は避難指示を出しました」— 'in response to the approaching typhoon, the city issued an evacuation order.'
- The sign in the shop when prices go up, 「原材料価格の高騰を受けて…」, or the company email 「ご指摘を受けて修正しました」— living in Japan, you will see this every week.
Meaning
- The root meaning of 「受ける」is 'to catch, to receive' — like catching a ball, you catch an event that came in and do something in reply.
- So after 「〜を受けて」there is always a step taken by an organisation or a person: a decision, a measure, an announcement, a change.
How to attach
Attach 「を受けて」after a noun; in writing just 「を受け、」is also used.
Versus what you know
- How it differs from forms you know: 「〜を機に」(L3) marks a good turning point to start something new (就職を機に), and 「〜を踏まえて」(L24) means carefully taking a result as the basis for a decision
- 「を受けて」is the reaction that comes right after an event, often after bad news or a request.
Watch out
The key rule: what follows must be someone's deliberate action — it isn't used for a natural result like 「雨を受けて、道がぬれた」.
