〜を禁ず (~o kinzu) — ~ is prohibited

When to use it

Look at the board on the fence of a construction site: 「関係者以外の立ち入りを禁ず」— 'no entry except for authorised persons.'
And on the last page of a magazine or book: 「無断転載を禁ず」(no reproduction without permission).

Meaning

「禁ず」is the old written ending of 「禁ずる」(= 禁じる, to prohibit) — so it sounds like an authority giving a firm order: 'Do not do this!'

How to attach

Attach 「を禁ず」after an action noun (立ち入り・転載・使用・喫煙).
In rule books you also see 「〜を禁ずる」or the modern 「〜を禁じます」— same meaning.

Versus what you know

In daily life you see 「〜禁止」as in 「駐車禁止」, or 「〜ないでください」; 「を禁ず」is the strict, formal version of those.
The earlier 「〜べからず」is also a sign-board ban, but it sounds even older and follows a verb (立ち入るべからず); 「を禁ず」takes a noun (立ち入りを禁ず).

Watch out

The key rule: it is the language of written signs and rules only — a shop clerk speaking to a customer says 「ご遠慮ください」, never 「禁ず」.

工事中につき、関係者以外の立ち入りを禁ず。

こうじちゅうにつき、かんけいしゃいがいのたちいりをきんず。

Construction in progress: no entry except for authorized persons.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 工事中につき = because construction is under way (signboard language) → 関係者以外の = of anyone other than those concerned → 立ち入り = entering (N) → 「を禁ず」= prohibited!

ほんしにけいさいされたきじ・しゃしんのむだんてんさいをきんず。

Reproduction of articles and photos in this magazine without permission is prohibited.

社員寮の室内での飲酒及び喫煙を禁ず。

しゃいんりょうのしつないでのいんしゅおよびきつえんをきんず。

Drinking alcohol and smoking inside the rooms of the company dormitory are prohibited.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 社員寮の室内での = inside the rooms of the company dorm → 飲酒及び喫煙 = drinking and smoking (the 及び from this very lesson!) → 「を禁ず」= both prohibited.
