Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
When a typhoon is coming, company emails, city-office websites and NHK news in Japan carry a sentence like 「台風の接近に鑑みて、本日のイベントは中止いたします」— 'in view of the approaching typhoon, today's event is cancelled.'
Meaning
- The feeling of 「鑑みる」is 'to look carefully, as into a mirror, and think'. So 「〜に鑑みて」says: we weighed this situation or fact seriously and made this decision because of it.
- 「鑑みて」carries a serious tone of 'the situation is this, so we have taken this responsible decision'.
How to attach
- Attach 「に鑑みて」after a noun (状況に鑑みて) — the particle is 「に」, not 「を」; for a whole clause use 「〜ことに鑑みて」.
- Notices often drop the 「て」and write just 「〜に鑑み、」with the same meaning.
- What follows is always a considered decision by an organisation or a responsible person (中止する・延期する・制限する).
Versus what you know
- The 「〜を踏まえて」from L24 also means 'taking into account', but it is about taking a result or discussion that already exists as the base for the next step
- 「〜に照らして」is checking right or wrong against a rule or standard.
Watch out
This is very stiff written and official language — use it for a small everyday thing like 'in view of my hunger, I ate ramen' and people will laugh.
