〜所存です (~shozon desu) — it is my intention to ~ (formal)
The humble, firm and formal 「つもりです」— in speeches, apology press conferences and greeting email.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- On TV a company president bows and apologises: 「再発防止に全力で取り組む所存です」— 'we are resolved to do everything we can so this never happens again.'
- On your first day at a new company, introducing yourself at the morning meeting (朝礼), you can also finish with 「一日も早く仕事を覚える所存です」.
Meaning
「所存(しょぞん)」means 'the thought held in one's heart, one's resolve'.
How to attach
- Attach 「所存です」to the dictionary form of a verb (even politer: 所存でございます); 「〜ていく所存です」is also common.
- Together with L9's 「〜べく」you often see 「〜べく、努力する所存です」.
Versus what you know
N4「〜つもりです」also means 'I intend to', but 「つもり」is an ordinary plan; 「所存です」sounds like you are humbly and seriously giving your word: 'I will do this.'
Watch out
- The key rule: the subject is always 'I' or 'we (our company)' — it is not used for someone else's plans (部長は退職なさる所存です ×).
- And for a small everyday plan (今晩カレーを作る所存です) it sounds like a joke.
