ともすれば〜 (tomosureba ~) — be apt to ~ (if not careful)

A word that warns at the very start of the sentence: 'if you're not careful, this easily slides the wrong way.'

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

ともすれば + Vます [ます] + がちだ
ともすれば + Vます [ます] + かねない
    ともすれば + V辞書形 + きらいがある

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

In a company's safety-training handout, a health article or an editorial you find 「仕事に慣れてくると、ともすれば安全確認がおろそかになりがちだ」— 'once you get used to the job, safety checks are apt to get careless.'

    Meaning

The feeling of 「ともすれば」is 'loosen your grip even a little, and it slides that way.'

    How to attach

    • So it never stands alone — the ending always needs a word of tendency or possibility: 「〜がちだ」「〜やすい」「〜かねない」, or the N1 「〜きらいがある」.
    • Place 「ともすれば」mid-sentence, right before the thing that slides, and end with 「Vます+がちだ」「Vます+かねない」「V辞書形+きらいがある」.
    • 「ともすると」and 「ややもすれば」mean exactly the same.

    Versus what you know

N3「〜がちだ」names a bad habit; 「ともすれば」sits in front of it and signals 'careful!' right as the sentence starts.

    Watch out

The key rule: the slide is always in a bad direction — it is not used for good things like 「ともすれば日本語が上手になりがちだ」; and not for a definite one-off event like yesterday's (「ともすれば財布を落とした」✗).
