〜は否めない (~wa inamenai) — it cannot be denied that ~ (admitting a weak point)
How reports and editorials honestly admit a weak point — usually followed by 'but…'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
After a big event or a new rule, news commentary or a company report says something like 「対応が後手に回った感は否めない」— 'there is no denying the impression that the response lagged behind.'
Meaning
- 「否む」= to deny, so 「否めない」= cannot be denied.
- There is a touch of reluctance in it: 'I'd rather not, but this weakness is real and has to be admitted.'
- So what comes in front is usually something bad — a delay, a shortage, a mistake, a risk.
- And very often it runs 「〜は否めないが、…」, going on to 'but there is a good side too' — in N1 reading, the writer's real opinion is usually after that 「が」.
How to attach
Attach 「は否めない」after a noun — especially words like 感・印象・可能性・事実; after a clause, add 「こと」or 「感」(遅れたことは否めない・急ぎすぎた感は否めない).
Versus what you know
Don't confuse it with the N1 「〜を禁じ得ない」: that is being unable to hold back a feeling inside — tears, sympathy, anger (涙を禁じ得ない); 「否めない」is being unable to deny a fact or an impression.
Watch out
The key rule: it is not used for feelings, and not in chat with friends — in speech 「確かに〜けど」is enough.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
新しいシステムの導入を、少し急ぎすぎた感は否めない。
あたらしいシステムのどうにゅうを、すこしいそぎすぎたかんはいなめない。
There is no denying the impression that the new system was brought in a little too hastily.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 新しいシステムの導入 = bringing in the new system → 少し急ぎすぎた = rushed a bit too much → add 「感」 = that impression → 「は否めない」= can't be denied (admitting a weak point).
人手不足により、サービスの質が下がっていることは否めない。
ひとでふそくにより、サービスのしつがさがっていることはいなめない。
It cannot be denied that, due to the labor shortage, the quality of service is falling.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 人手不足により = because of the labor shortage → サービスの質が下がっている = service quality is falling → add 「こと」 to make it a noun → 「は否めない」= can't be denied.
外国人への情報提供が遅れたことは否めないが、市の対応は全体として適切だった。
がいこくじんへのじょうほうていきょうがおくれたことはいなめないが、しのたいおうはぜんたいとしててきせつだった。
It cannot be denied that information reached foreign residents late, but overall the city's response was appropriate.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 外国人への情報提供が遅れた = information to foreigners came late → 「こと」 → 「は否めないが」= I have to admit it, but… → then the writer's real view: 市の対応は全体として適切だった = overall the city's response was appropriate.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「説明が足りなかった__否めない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Turn the clause into a noun, then the topic particle.
Clause + こと + は否めない: 足りなかったことは否めない = it can't be denied it was lacking.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: A fact or impression, or a feeling inside?
否めない is for facts and impressions. For sympathy you can't hold back, say 「同情を禁じ得なかった」.
「事故で家族を失った人の話に、涙を__。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Tears = a feeling inside.
Can't hold back a feeling = 〜を禁じ得ない. 否めない is about a fact or impression that can't be denied, not tears.
