Judge one thing from two angles: 'whichever way you look, it's like this.'
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You go to see a new apartment. Two minutes from the station, cheap rent too.
- Back home you tell a friend: 「駅からの近さといい家賃といい、この部屋は文句なしだ。」— the closeness, the rent; whichever way you look, this room is perfect.
Meaning
- 「〜といい〜といい」= look at one thing or person from two angles and reach one judgement.
- The speaker's feeling — admiration or annoyance — is strong, and it implies 'these two are just examples; everything else is the same.'
- What follows is a judgement or state: 最高だ・文句なしだ・そっくりだ・ひどい.
How to attach
- After nouns only: 色といい形といい
- Turn an adjective into a noun first: 近さ・安さ
Versus what you know
- N5It overlaps with 「〜も〜も」(デザインも色も), but the feeling here is much stronger.
- 「であれ〜であれ」says 'whichever, the rule is the same'; this one says 'look at its qualities — how good (or bad) it is.'
Watch out
A request or wish (〜てください・〜たい) cannot follow — this form only says 'in my eyes, it is like this.'
