〜いかんでは (~ikan de wa) — depending on ~ (it may even come to …)
'Depending on how this turns out, even this could happen' — a formal way to warn.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A letter comes from your language school: 'Depending on your attendance, renewing your visa may become difficult.'
- It is the stiff language of notices, company mail and the news.
Meaning
- 「〜いかんでは」has two parts — something that can vary (attendance), and one of the possible results it may bring, usually a big or bad one (visa trouble).
- After it usually comes 〜こともある・〜かもしれない・〜場合がある・〜ざるを得ない — 'this could also happen'.
How to attach
- Straight after a noun (結果いかんでは) or with 「の」
- 「いかんによっては」is used with the same meaning.
Versus what you know
- The previous point, 「いかんだ」, ends the sentence with 'it depends on that'; 「いかんでは」sits mid-sentence and points to one possible outcome after it.
- N2It means the same as 「次第では」and 「によっては」, but it is stiffer.
Watch out
- A fixed, always-true result does not follow.
- Nobody uses this stiff word for small daily things like tonight's dinner.
