When to use it
- When you apply for a job, the company website says: 'Whatever the selection result, documents sent to us will not be returned.'
- Pass or fail, the rule is the same.
- Nobody uses it in chat with friends.
Meaning
- 「〜いかんにかかわらず」= 'whatever that thing turns out to be, it has no effect on what follows'.
- What follows is a rule, a decision or something that will not change: 〜できません・〜いたしかねます・〜です.
How to attach
- N + 「の」+ いかんにかかわらず (理由のいかんにかかわらず) — the 「の」may be dropped
- 「いかんによらず」is used with the same meaning.
Versus what you know
- The previous two points, 「いかんだ・いかんでは」, said 'it depends on that'; this is the exact opposite — 'it does not depend on it'.
- N2「〜にかかわらず」(「天候にかかわらず」「来る来ないにかかわらず」) takes pairs or categories (weather, coming or not); 「いかんにかかわらず」says 'whatever the content or circumstances of it are' (理由・結果・内容・事情), and sounds much stiffer.
