〜いかんを問わず (~ikan o towazu) — regardless of ~ / no matter what ~ is
'We will not even ask what it is' — the stiffest language of rules and penalties.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Your language school's rules say: 'Whatever the reason, three late arrivals count as one absence.'
- The train was late, you were sick — nobody asks; the rule is the same.
- Always written, formal language.
Meaning
- 「問わず」literally means 'without asking', so 「〜いかんを問わず」gives a strong feeling of 'we will not even look at what it is'.
- What follows is a rule, a penalty or a firm decision: 〜とみなします・〜は許されない・〜受け付けません.
How to attach
N + 「の」+ いかんを問わず — here 「の」is required (理由のいかんを問わず, × 理由いかんを問わず)
Versus what you know
- The meaning is almost the same as the previous point, 「いかんにかかわらず」; the difference is only in how it attaches (the 「の」).
- N2「〜を問わず」(「年齢を問わず」「男女を問わず」) takes categories or pairs like age, gender, experience; 「いかんを問わず」takes the 'content' of something — a reason, a motive, the circumstances.
Watch out
It never attaches to a verb pair like 「来る来ない」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
理由のいかんを問わず、遅刻三回で欠席一回とみなします。
りゆうのいかんをとわず、ちこくさんかいでけっせきいっかいとみなします。
Whatever the reason, three late arrivals will be counted as one absence.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 理由 = reason → 「の」 (required) → 「いかんを問わず」 = whatever it is, no questions asked → then the rule: 欠席一回とみなします (counted as one day absent).
事情のいかんを問わず、締め切り後の申し込みは受け付けません。
じじょうのいかんをとわず、しめきりごのもうしこみはうけつけません。
Regardless of circumstances, applications after the deadline will not be accepted.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 事情 = circumstances → 「の」 → 「いかんを問わず」 → then a strict decision: 受け付けません (will not be accepted).
動機のいかんを問わず、暴力は決して許されない。
どうきのいかんをとわず、ぼうりょくはけっしてゆるされない。
Whatever the motive, violence can never be forgiven.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 動機 = motive, why someone did it → 「の」 → 「いかんを問わず」 → then a strong judgment: 決して許されない (will never be forgiven) — news/editorial language.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「理由_いかんを問わず、返品はお断りします。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: What is required between the noun and いかん in this form?
N + の + いかんを問わず. With いかんを問わず the の cannot be dropped.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Does a noun come before いかん, or a verb pair?
いかんを問わず only takes nouns like 理由・事情・目的; for a verb pair like 「来る来ない」use the N2 「来る来ないにかかわらず」.
「年齢___、だれでも応募できます。」— which is most natural?
💡 Hint: Age is a category, and the meaning must be 'it does not matter'.
For a category like age, the N2 「を問わず」is most natural. いかんでは and いかんによっては mean 'depending on' — the opposite.
