Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A senior at your factory works on the line all week, and on Saturdays she teaches Japanese to Nepali children — she has done it for five years.
- The local paper wrote about her: 「彼女は工場で働くかたわら、週末は子どもたちに日本語を教えている」.
- It is a slightly written form, common in biographies, news and profiles.
Meaning
- 「〜かたわら」= 'while carrying on a main activity (a job, studies, housework), someone also does another thing beside it, over a long time.'
- It is a lifestyle lasting months or years.
How to attach
- Noun + 「の」: 会社勤めのかたわら
- Verb dictionary form: 働くかたわら
- What follows is usually 〜ている — the other activity kept up over time.
Versus what you know
- The 「がてら」and 「かたがた」you just learned are about one trip or one visit.
- N4「ながら」is two actions at the same moment (歩きながら話す); with 「かたわら」the two activities are not literally simultaneous — one is the main one, the other sits beside it.
Watch out
It is not for small actions at one moment — 「音楽を聞くかたわら宿題をする」is wrong; use 「ながら」.
