Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Fighting with a younger brother at home, or when a friend who does not know tries to teach you: 「知らないくせして、知っているようなことを言うな」.
- It is only for friends and those younger than you — it does not exist in written Japanese at all.
Meaning
- 「〜くせして」= 'you are like this, and still you do that?!' — the speaker is annoyed, looking down, or saying 'that does not suit you'.
- It is not said about weather or things, but about people (usually the one standing in front of you).
How to attach
- A verb or い-adjective in plain form as it is: 知らないくせして・弱いくせして
- A noun with 「の」: 大学生のくせして
- A な-adjective with 「な」: 下手なくせして — exactly like 「くせに」.
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「くせに」— 「知らないくせに、偉そうに言うな」. 「くせして」is its even more casual, even more scolding little brother.
- N4The meaning overlaps with 「のに」, but 「のに」is neutral and 「くせして」is always negative.
- This lesson's 「にもかかわらず」is the exact opposite — formal and respectful.
Watch out
Never use it to a manager or a senior.
