〜ものの (~mono no) — although it is true that… (the expected result did not follow)
'I did, but…' — the けど that admits the fact and then says it did not go as expected.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
「試験に申し込みはしたものの、まだ全然勉強していない」— sound familiar?
Meaning
- 「〜ものの」= 'the first part is true, I admit it — but the result that should naturally follow has not come'.
- What follows says 'there is still a problem / it is not as expected'.
How to attach
- A verb or い-adjective in plain form: 買ったものの・高いものの
- A な-adjective with 「な」or「である」: 便利なものの・便利であるものの
- A noun with 「である」: 学生であるものの
- 「は」is slipped in, as in 「〜てはいる」「〜はした」, to stress 'I did do it': 通ってはいるものの・買いはしたものの
- With a noun or い-adjective, 「とはいうものの」is far more common — it and 「とはいいながら」have their own pages.
Versus what you know
- N4「けど」and「のに」also say 'but', yet 「ものの」is more serious and written, with the tone of first conceding the fact: 'yes, that is so, but…'.
- N3It is close to 「ながらも」, but 「ものの」attaches only to facts or things that are as good as certain.
Watch out
- Never on guesses or imagination — only on facts.
- A request or invitation like 「〜てください」「〜ましょう」never follows.

💡 Hint: For a な-adjective, drop 「だ」and add what?
な-adj + な / である + ものの. 便利なものの = convenient, yes, but.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Can an instruction to someone follow?
「ものの」is never followed by a request like 「〜てください」— only a fact that 'a problem remains'.
What kind of sentence follows 「〜ものの」?
💡 Hint: What comes after the 'but' in 'true, but…'?
ものの concedes the fact but the expected result is missing — so what follows is 'not as expected / still a problem'.
