〜にもかかわらず (~ni mo kakawarazu) — in spite of / despite
The formal, written のに — for speeches, news and reports.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- With friends 「のに」is all you need; but in a speech, on the news, in a company report or a formal email the same meaning comes dressed more seriously: 「〜にもかかわらず」.
- At the start of a party the manager says 「本日は雨にもかかわらず、多くの方に来ていただき、ありがとうございます」(thank you for coming in such numbers despite the rain).
Meaning
- 「〜にもかかわらず」= despite: the first thing should have stopped the second, yet the second happened unaffected.
- So a little surprise, 'and still!', is built in; what comes before is usually a real obstacle (悪天候・努力・病気).
How to attach
- A noun as it is: 雨にもかかわらず
- A verb or い-adjective in plain form: 痛めたにもかかわらず・忙しいにもかかわらず
- For a な-adjective or noun drop 「だ」and use 「である」: フリーソフトであるにもかかわらず
Versus what you know
- N4「のに」(雨なのに来た = it was raining, yet they came) means the same, but 「にもかかわらず」is much more formal and written.
- Do not mix it up with Lesson 9's 「〜にかかわらず」(regardless of: 国籍にかかわらず) — that one 「も」turns 'no matter which' into 'even so'.
Watch out
- What follows can never be your own wish, plan or an instruction ('I will', 'let's', 'please') — only a fact that happened or is happening.
- 「雨にもかかわらず、行きましょう」is wrong; say 「雨でも行きましょう」there.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
台風にもかかわらず、店長は店を開けた。
たいふうにもかかわらず、てんちょうはみせをあけた。
Despite the typhoon, the manager opened the shop.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 台風 = typhoon (noun) → it is an N, so we attach 「にもかかわらず」 to it as it is → then the surprising fact: 店を開けた.
何度も説明したにもかかわらず、彼はまた同じミスをした。
なんどもせつめいしたにもかかわらず、かれはまたおなじミスをした。
Even though I explained it many times, he made the same mistake again.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 説明する = to explain → it already happened, so 説明した → attach 「にもかかわらず」 directly to the 普通形 → then the opposite result: 同じミスをした.
忙しいにもかかわらず、先輩は僕の書類を直してくれた。
いそがしいにもかかわらず、せんぱいはぼくのしょるいをなおしてくれた。
Even though they were busy, my senior corrected my documents for me.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 忙しい = busy (い-adj) → attach 「にもかかわらず」 to it as it is → then a fact mixed with gratitude: 直してくれた.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「この道具は便利_にもかかわらず、あまり売れていない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: For a な-adjective, drop 「だ」and put what?
な-adj / N + である + にもかかわらず. 便利であるにもかかわらず = despite being convenient.
Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: Can your own intention follow?
「にもかかわらず」cannot be followed by 「〜よう・〜たい・〜てください」— only facts. Say 「疲れていても早く寝よう」.
「あんなに練習した_、試合に負けてしまった。」— to say 'despite all that practice, we lost the match', which one?
💡 Hint: Not 'regardless', but 'even so'.
にもかかわらず = even so (のに): 練習したにもかかわらず = despite practising. にかかわらず (regardless of) does not take a lone Vた — it needs a pair (練習する・しないにかかわらず); を問わず and に限らず do not attach to verbs.
