〜となると (~to naru to) — when it comes to / if it turns out that
'If it really comes to that' — not a fantasy, something that may actually happen.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Say a transfer comes up at work: 「来月転勤となると、家を探さなければならない」(if it turns out I'm transferred next month, I'll have to find a place).
Meaning
- 「〜となると」= 'if it really comes to that' — not a mere fantasy; it considers the case where something that can happen actually does.
- What follows is the speaker's judgement or prediction: 〜必要だ・〜だろう・〜なければならない.
- Another use: N(のこと) + となると = 'once that topic comes up, the person changes' — 「兄はサッカーのこととなると、話が止まらない」(when it comes to football, my brother can't stop talking).
- In this use what follows always says 'he/she becomes different from usual'.
How to attach
- N or plain form + となると: 引っ越すとなると・真実だとなれば
- 「となれば」and「となったら」are used with the same meaning.
Versus what you know
N3「〜としたら」is a 'let's suppose' (たからくじが当たったとしたら…); 「となると」has the feeling 'this is about to happen; what then?'.
Watch out
After 「となると」(and 「とすると」) you cannot put your own wish (〜たい) or a sentence urging someone (〜てください・〜ましょう).

When it comes to soccer, my brother just can't stop talking.
