〜どころではない (~dokoro de wa nai) — this is no time / no situation for ~

'Karaoke? This is no time for that!' — when there is no time, money or health to spare.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + どころではない/どころじゃない
    Verb V辞書形/Vている + どころではない/どころじゃない
    N N + どころではなく、〜

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

A friend says 「今夜カラオケ行かない?」but your report is due tomorrow — 「カラオケどころじゃないよ!」(this is no time for karaoke!).

    Meaning

    • 「〜どころではない」= because of money, time, health or noise, 'this is not a situation where I can do that' — with the feeling 'how could I even think about it?'.
    • It has a second sense too: 'not at that level, far beyond it' — 「ただの風邪どころではなく、はいえんだった」(not just a cold, it was pneumonia).

    How to attach

    • Attach N or dictionary form (also Vている) + どころではない
    • In speech どころじゃない
    • Mid-sentence どころではなく〜
    • Set phrase 「それどころではない」= this is no time for that.

    Versus what you know

    • N4「できない」only says 'can't'; どころではない says 'the situation itself rules it out', a bit irritated, in a hurry.
    • N3You learned 「〜どころか」(夏休みどころか日曜日も休めない = never mind summer holidays, I can't even take Sundays off) — same word, but どころか compares two things, どころではない describes your situation.

    Watch out

Always a bad, no-room situation — never for a happy reason.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    明日までにレポートを出さなきゃいけないから、カラオケどころじゃないよ。

    あしたまでにレポートをださなきゃいけないから、カラオケどころじゃないよ。

I have to hand in a report by tomorrow — this is no time for karaoke.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) カラオケ = a noun → we attach 「どころじゃない」 directly (spoken) → "I'm in no position to even think of that" → 〜から in front gives the reason: the report → 「よ」 adds emphasis for a friend.

    店が忙しすぎて、昼ご飯を食べるどころではなかった。

    みせがいそがしすぎて、ひるごはんをたべるどころではなかった。

The shop was so busy there was no chance even to eat lunch.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 食べる = to eat (辞書形) → we attach 「どころではない」 to the 辞書形 as it is → past: どころではなかった → 〜て in front gives the reason: 忙しすぎて.

    風邪だと思っていたら、ただの風邪どころではなく、はいえんだった。

    かぜだとおもっていたら、ただのかぜどころではなく、はいえんだった。

I thought it was a cold, but it was far more than a cold — it was pneumonia.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ただの風邪 = a plain cold (the level I'd thought) → 「どころではなく」 (the なく form, mid-sentence) → "not at that level — far above it" → then the reality: はいえんだった.
