〜ざるを得ない (~zaru o enai) — have no choice but to (reluctantly)
Don't want to, but circumstances force it — the formal, written しかない.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- The 店長 says 「日曜日も人が足りないから出てくれ」— you don't want to, but there is no way out: 「日曜日も出勤せざるを得ない」(I have no choice but to work Sunday too).
- 「ざる」is old Japanese for 「ない」, so it carries a formal, written, news-report tone.
Meaning
- 「〜ざるを得ない」= 'I don't want to, but circumstances force me'.
- 「〜と言わざるを得ない」= 'one has to say (something unpleasant)' — very common in reports and debate.
How to attach
- Drop ない from Vない and add ざる: 書かない → 書かざるを得ない, 引っ越さない → 引っ越さざるを得ない
- する → 「せざる」(しざる ✗)
- 来る → 来(こ)ざる
Versus what you know
- N3「〜しかない」is the everyday version of this meaning.
- N3「〜ないわけにはいかない」also says 'must', but there the reason is social duty, 義理 (I can't not go to my friend's wedding).
- ざるを得ない is circumstances squeezing you, with a bitter aftertaste.
Watch out
- Volitional verbs only — 雨が降らざるを得ない ✗
- The subject is usually 'I/we', often unwritten; it is rarely said about a specific third person.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 出勤する = to go to work → the special form of する: せ (しざる ✗) → we attach 「ざるを得ない」: 出勤せざるを得ない → "I don't want to, but I have to go" → 〜ので in front gives the reason that forces it.
家賃が上がったので、引っ越さざるを得なくなった。
やちんがあがったので、ひっこさざるをえなくなった。
The rent went up, so I've been forced to move out.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 引っ越す → ない-form: 引っ越さない → drop ない: 引っ越さ → 「ざるを得ない」 → 〜なくなった says "it has come to that" → the reason in front: 家賃が上がった.
この説明では不十分だと言わざるを得ない。
このせつめいではふじゅうぶんだといわざるをえない。
I have to say that this explanation is insufficient.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 言う → ない-form: 言わない → drop ない: 言わ → 「ざるを得ない」: 言わざるを得ない = I don't want to say it, but I have to → 〜と in front marks what is said: 不十分だ.

Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: Is the verb something a person chooses to do?
ざるを得ない takes volitional verbs only (意志動詞につく); rain is nobody's choice.
What does 「〜と言わざるを得ない」mean?
💡 Hint: ざる = ない, 得ない = cannot → 'cannot not say'.
ざるを得ない = cannot avoid doing; 言わざるを得ない = have to say it, however unpleasant.
