    〜にしたら (~ni shitara) — from N's standpoint (a person)

One step deeper than 「にとって」— standing in someone's shoes and guessing how they feel.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N(人) + にしたら/にすれば/にしてみれば/にしても

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • A friend complains that the 店長 got annoyed when he asked for a sudden day off. You reply: 「店長にしたら、急に休まれるのは困るだろう」(if you were the manager, a sudden absence would be a real problem).
    • You are taking the manager's side and reading his mind.

    Meaning

    • 「〜にしたら」= you step into someone's shoes and guess how they must feel from where they stand.
    • What follows is usually a guess: 〜だろう・〜かもしれない・〜はずだ・〜にちがいない.

    How to attach

    • A noun for a person + にしたら
    • Same meaning: にすれば・にしてみれば・にしても
    • 「にしてみれば」adds a little 'once you actually try standing there'.
    • 「にしても」adds 'from their side too'.

    Versus what you know

    • N3「〜にとって」(私にとって日本語は大切だ) only judges how something is 'for' someone — 'important / hard'.
    • 「にしたら」goes inside the person's head; 「にとって」never does that.

    Watch out

    • People only — 「この問題にしたら」does not exist.
    • It is normally about someone other than yourself — for your own view don't say 「私にしたら」, just say 「私は〜」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    店長にしたら、急に休まれるのは困るだろう。

    てんちょうにしたら、きゅうにやすまれるのはこまるだろう。

From the manager's point of view, someone suddenly taking the day off must be a real problem.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 店長 = the shop manager (a person) → we attach 「にしたら」: we stand in their place → then a guess at how they feel: 困るだろう.

    日本に来たばかりの人にしてみれば、電車の乗り換えは本当に難しいはずだ。

    にほんにきたばかりのひとにしてみれば、でんしゃののりかえはほんとうにむずかしいはずだ。

For someone who has just arrived in Japan, changing trains must be really hard.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 日本に来たばかりの人 = someone who has just come to Japan → 「にしてみれば」: looking at it once from their place → then the guess: 難しいはずだ.

    田舎の両親にしても、息子が外国で働くのは心配にちがいない。

    いなかのりょうしんにしても、むすこががいこくではたらくのはしんぱいにちがいない。

For the parents back home, too, having a son working abroad must surely be a worry.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 田舎の両親 = parents back home → 「にしても」: from their side too → then a guess at how they feel: 心配にちがいない.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3
