〜ほうがましだ (~hō ga mashi da) — better (than the worst) / at least

Not good, but better than that — the word for the lesser of two evils.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb V普通形 + だけましだ
    い-adj い-adj + だけましだ
    な-adj な-adj [だ] + な + だけましだ
    Verb Vた/V辞書形 + ほうが(まだ/ずっと)ましだ
    N N/V辞書形 + より(は)ましだ

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Looking at the packed morning train: 「満員電車に乗るくらいなら、30分歩いたほうがましだ」(rather than ride a packed train, I would sooner walk thirty minutes).
    • Walking is no fun, but better than the train.

    Meaning

    • 「〜ほうがましだ」= 'neither is good, but this one is less bad'.
    • It is also how you console yourself: 「給料は安いけど、仕事がないよりはずっとましだ」.
    • 「〜だけましだ」= 'at least there is this': 「部屋は狭いけど、駅から近いだけましだ」.

    How to attach

    • Main shape: Vた/dictionary form + ほうが + (まだ・ずっと) ましだ — 30分歩いたほうがましだ
    • 「ほうが」can drop when 「より」does the comparing: N/V + より(は)+ (まだ・ずっと) ましだ — 仕事がないよりはずっとましだ
    • For 'at least there is this' there is no ほうが either: plain-form verb/い-adj + だけましだ
    • な-adj: 「便利なだけましだ」(drop だ, add な)
    • It usually travels with: 「〜より」「〜ほうが」「まだ」「ずっと」「〜だけ」

    Versus what you know

    • N4「〜ほうがいい」= advice that 'doing this is good'; 「ましだ」= 'better than that / at least' — that is the difference.
    • N3「〜くらいなら」(あんな店で食べるくらいなら、うちで食べたほうがいい) = 'rather than that' — ましだ often sits at the end of that same sentence.

    Watch out

    • Never use 「まし」to praise something genuinely good — 「世界一の選手だからだれよりましだ」sounds wrong.
    • 「まし」is only ever 'the least bad among bad'.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    満員電車に乗るくらいなら、30分歩いたほうがましだ。

    まんいんでんしゃにのるくらいなら、さんじゅっぷんあるいたほうがましだ。

If it means riding a packed train, I'd rather walk for thirty minutes.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 乗る = to ride → 「くらいなら」 sets up the bad option → 歩いた (た-form) + 「ほうがましだ」: walking isn't great either, but I'd rather do that.

    給料は安いけれど、仕事がないよりはずっとましだ。

    きゅうりょうはやすいけれど、しごとがないよりはずっとましだ。

The pay is low, but it is far better than having no job at all.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 仕事がない = having no job (even worse) → 「より」 makes the comparison → 「ずっと」 adds emphasis → 「ましだ」: less bad.

    部屋は狭いけど、駅から近いだけましだ。

    へやはせまいけど、えきからちかいだけましだ。

The room is small, but at least it is close to the station.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 近い = close (い-adj, as it is) → we attach 「だけましだ」: at least there's that → 「けど」 in front gives the bad side: 狭い.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「僕のアパートは狭くて高いけれど、便利_だけましだ。」— fill the blank.

    💡 Hint: な-adj + だけ — what replaces だ?
