〜も同然だ (~mo dōzen da) — as good as / practically
Not exactly that, but practically the same — 新品も同然だ (as good as new).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Selling a bike you have ridden only three times: 「3回しか乗っていないから、新品も同然だ」(ridden only three times, so as good as new).
Meaning
「〜も同然だ」= 'not exactly that, but practically the same'.
How to attach
- N (も) + 同然だ: 新品も同然だ
- Plain-form verb/ない + も + 同然だ: 死んだも同然・ないも同然
- Before a noun: 同然の N
Versus what you know
- 「〜て当然だ」and 「〜のももっともだ」say 'naturally'; も同然だ points a slightly different way — 'as good as'.
- 「て当然」= the deserved result, 「もっともだ」= someone's feeling is justified, 「も同然」= 'as good as' — similar look, different jobs.
Watch out
Don't mix up 「当然」(とうぜん) and 「同然」(どうぜん): 当然 takes て/で, 同然 takes も — 「便利で同然」is wrong.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
この自転車は3回しか乗っていないから、新品も同然だ。
このじてんしゃは3かいしかのっていないから、しんぴんもどうぜんだ。
This bicycle has only been ridden three times, so it is as good as new.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 新品 = something brand new (N) → we attach 「も同然だ」: not exactly new, but as good as new → the reason in front: 3回しか乗っていないから.
5対0だから、この試合はもう勝ったも同然だ。
5たい0だから、このしあいはもうかったもどうぜんだ。
It's 5–0, so this match is as good as won.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 勝つ = to win → past: 勝った → we attach 「も同然だ」: the match isn't over, but it's as good as won → the reason in front: 5対0だから.
日本語がほとんど話せないので、会議では私はいないも同然だった。
にほんごがほとんどはなせないので、かいぎではわたしはいないもどうぜんだった。
I can hardly speak Japanese, so at the meeting I might as well not have been there.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) いる = to be there → ない-form: いない → 「も同然だ」 → past: も同然だった → "I was there, but as good as not" → the reason is in 〜ので in front.

Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: What attaches before 同然?
同然だ takes N/plain verb/ない + も (新品も同然・ないも同然); 「便利で同然」does not exist — 「で」belongs to 当然だ.
「もう3年も連絡がないから、別れた_。」— 'as good as broken up'. Which?
💡 Hint: Not exactly, but practically the same.
Vた + も同然だ: 別れたも同然だ = as good as broken up. 同然 takes 「も」before it; 「別れたて」「別れたで」「別れたが同然」are all wrong.
「あの店は客が一人も来ないから、つぶれたも同然だ。」— what does it mean?
💡 Hint: Not exactly, but practically the same.
も同然だ = it has not really happened, but the situation is practically the same — the shop is still open, but as good as closed.
