〜よりほか(は)ない (~yori hoka (wa) nai) — there is no other way but to
The formal, slightly resigned elder brother of N3 「しかない」— 'no other road, this is it'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You asked for a day off and the 店長 said 「その日は無理」. To a friend: 「店長がだめって言うなら、あきらめるよりほかないね」— 'if the manager says no, there is nothing to do but give up'.
- It is hard, written and formal — in daily talk 「しかない」is what you hear.
Meaning
- 「〜よりほか(は)ない」= 'there is no option, means or possibility other than ~'.
- It usually carries 'reluctantly, I am forced into this one choice': 「ビザが下りるまで待つよりほかない」「全力をつくした。あとは祈るよりほかない」.
How to attach
- Dictionary form + よりほかない: 待つよりほかない
- 「よりほかはない」with は also works, and 「ほかない」without より.
Versus what you know
- N3Same meaning as 「〜しかない」, but 「しかない」can also be eager — seeing the bag you wanted at half price: 「これは買うしかない!」.
- 「よりほかない」is never said with that excitement — it is the word of having no choice.
- Its partner 「〜よりしかたがない」means the same — 'nothing for it but to ~' (next page).
Watch out
- It does not attach straight to a noun (× タクシーよりほかない).
- Nor to the past form (× あきらめたよりほかない) — always the dictionary form.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
終電がなくなったので、タクシーで帰るよりほかなかった。
しゅうでんがなくなったので、タクシーでかえるよりほかなかった。
The last train was gone, so I had no choice but to take a taxi home.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 帰る = to go back → 「よりほかない」 on the V辞書形 → past: 「よりほかなかった」 → "there was no other way, I had to take a taxi" → 「ので」 gives the reason.
ビザが下りるまでは、ただ待つよりほかはない。
ビザがおりるまでは、ただまつよりほかはない。
Until the visa comes through, all I can do is wait.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 待つ = to wait → 「よりほかはない」 (adding 「は」 for more emphasis) → "nothing to do but wait" → 「ただ」 (just) strengthens the feeling of having no choice.
店長がだめと言うなら、あきらめるよりほかない。
てんちょうがだめというなら、あきらめるよりほかない。
If the manager says no, there's nothing to do but give up.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) あきらめる = to give up → 「よりほかない」 on the V辞書形 → "there's no other way" → 「なら」 in front gives the reason: if the 店長 says no.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「バスが来ないので、駅まで_よりほかない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which verb form goes before よりほかない?
V辞書形 + よりほかない: 歩くよりほかない = no choice but to walk.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Can よりほかない attach straight to a noun?
よりほかない always takes the dictionary form; it cannot follow a bare noun → タクシーで帰るよりほかない.
「終電がなくなった。タクシーで帰るよりほかない。」— what is the speaker's feeling?
💡 Hint: Excitement, or no choice?
よりほかない = no other way, so you do it reluctantly. Said in excitement it is 「しかない!」(これは買うしかない!), not よりほかない.
