〜よりしかたがない (~yori shikata ga nai) — there is nothing for it but to
'There is no other way, this is it' — あとは祈るよりしかたがない (now there's nothing left but to pray).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
After doing everything you could: 「できることは全部やった。あとは結果を祈るよりしかたがない」(now there's nothing left but to pray for the result).
Meaning
「〜よりしかたがない」= 'there is nothing for it but to ~' — reluctantly forced into this one choice.
How to attach
- Dictionary form + よりしかたがない: 祈るよりしかたがない
- The past goes only at the end: 借りるよりしかたがなかった
Versus what you know
- Same meaning as its partner 「〜よりほか(は)ない」— 'no way but to ~'.
- N3「〜しかない」is the everyday form and can be eager (これは買うしかない!); よりしかたがない is only for having no choice.
Watch out
- Never said in excitement — 「セールだ!買うよりしかたがない!」is unnatural.
- It does not attach straight to a noun; always the dictionary form.
